Community organisations and role models from across the UK headed to the breathtaking Liverpool Cathedral on 4th February to witness the countries 2021 winners being crowned the best of British diversity.

Harlow’s very own Changing Lives Community Services CIC emerged as winners of the Multi-Strand category for developing an early intervention and prevention project helping over 1000 children learn about the dangers of gangs.

Their objective, to create social, sporting and work experiences that will install confidence and motivation for children, providing them with opportunities and pathways towards a positive future. 1210 young people have attended at least one session at the hub in the last 8 months of opening, 120 young people have attended wellbeing sessions, and 1000 young people have been supported through Holidays Clubs.

Rachel Lewis, Active Essex Relationship Manager for West Essex, said: “With the rise of anti-social behaviour, the Changing Lives team are working tirelessly to tackle these issues. Recently, Changing Lives have opened their new Community Hub supporting the most vulnerable families in Harlow. We are so proud to be supporting Changing Lives in the endeavours and so pleased they have been recognised on such a nationwide stage.”

ITV News have been working in conjunction with organisers leading up to the ceremony to highlight shortlisted nominees on regional and national news channels. The ceremony, which was also live streamed, has been described as the ‘golden globes of the diversity world’ among attendees.

In addition to real life diversity heroes, a number of special guests made an appearance at the UK’s largest diversity awards to show their support for the incredible nominees who have changed the lives of many.

David Simmons, Co-Director said “It’s an honour to win such a prestigious award, only setting up the organisation 4 years ago it’s a true privilege to win a national award. The support we have had from the local community, opening a Community Hub in the town, reaching a Cup Final with our Refugee Football Team, supporting children and parents with sports programmes, educational workshops, and care packages. It’s been an amazing 4 years! A huge thank you must go to our key funders including Active Essex, PFCC, National Lottery, Harlow Council as well as our key sponsors Cleanbrite and Alisped for supporting us throughout our journey.

Actor and comedian Richard Blackwood, footballing legend John Barnes and one of the country’s favourite TV chefs, Ainsley Harriott praised charities for their staggering achievements. With an astonishing 50,000 people nominated last year alone with 124 nominees being recognised for their various achievements nationwide.

Active Essex commend Changing Lives CIC on their prestigious award and look forward to supporting them on their continued journey.
