Transforming lives and communities through Essex ActivAte

Jason's Reflections

If you’ve read my reflections before, or whether you’re new, I do tend to wrestle with the power of numbers, vs storytelling. Today I want to try to utilise both.

As I reflect on the recent evaluation launched of Essex ActivAte’s Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme, and after visiting many clubs over the summer, I’m proud of the impact this initiative has had on our communities.

In Essex, like many places across the country, disparities between communities can be stark, especially in areas of deprivation. But what excites me most about Essex ActivAte is how it directly addresses these gaps, working tirelessly to level the playing field for all. It was clear to see in my visits, that this programme isn’t just offering support – its fostering hope, resilience and growth.

The evaluation report details the incredible social value generated – an estimated £22.5 million for the 2024 programme alone. But these figures represent so much more than just numbers, they tell the story of transformation – of lives changed, futures brightened, and communities uplifted.

When we talk about social return on investment, it can sound like jargon, but it is a concept that captures the essence of what we’re doing, and measures the value of the programme, not just in economic terms, but in the positive ripple effects across society. When it comes to analysing the Essex ActivAte programme, it touches on the improved wellbeing, enhanced education and strengthened community ties which are the real returns. It’s a holistic way to understand the transformative power of Essex ActivAte, balancing the benefits against the costs and seeing the full picture of our collective impact. To return to my earlier point, the importance of storytelling, alongside the numbers truly highlights the impact.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the clubs, as it provided me with the insight that they are more than just a place for children to spend their holidays, they are vibrant hubs of learning, support and enrichment for the whole family. They provide children with unforgettable experiences whilst also offering vital support to parents/carers, enabling them to work, providing workshops on numeracy and food education, as well as supporting their mental wellbeing.

Seeing firsthand the dedication of our deliverers and volunteers and witnessing the joy and growth of the young people involved, my visits reminded me exactly why we do this type of work, and the importance of it.
