The Over 50’s Black Men Forum are taking a lead on addressing issues of concern to their community, issues such as a lack of movement and activity in daily routines. The Over 50s Black Men Forum has started a new table tennis project to kickstart their campaign to get their members into physical activity to address their concern.
When deciding what activity to engage in, the members opted for a group vote which resulted in a lot of interest shown in table tennis. Not only was it reported that table tennis is less tasking on the knees but it’s a low cost activity which many members had engaged in in their youth. Bringing back their youth wasn’t only achieved by the activity but friendships and bonds from decades ago were reformed as the league brought the wider community together.
This new project was supported by Sport England’s Together Fund, which is distributed and managed by Active Essex, for equipment, venue hire and publicity, as well as a part time activity coordinator. Active Essex have become well known in the Older Black Community as a positive organisation which supports their needs and concerns, especially in terms of aiding their health and fitness journey.
Many of the members explained how the two weekly sessions has improved their activity levels and they came ready to get moving and get sweating each week!
One participant said;
“I always look forward to the weekend because I know Tuesday is just round the corner when I go for the TT and how this is helping me exercise and keep healthy. It is helping my mobility and agility and definitely makes me feel healthier after the sweat.”
As well as improving their health, stamina and agility this table tennis league has strengthened the community and brough members together on a regular basis which combats another one of their concerns, loneliness.
Ola Aminu, another participant said;
“Joining a table tennis group has been a transformative experience, enhancing my social life, physical health, mental well-being, and overall personal growth. It’s a testament to the numerous benefits that can come from engaging in a recreational activity with others who share a common interest.”
Activity can have a wide range of benefits, aiding our mind and body which is evident from the positive stories that the Over 50’s Black Men Forum have been able to share, and we hope we can fund more projects like this that bring a community closer.
