As a county we have been playing New Age Kurling since 2013 and it is rapidly growing within all of our schools – primary secondary and special schools It is a target-based game where teams take it in turns to deliver their ‘stone’ The aim is to get their kurling stone to stop nearest to the centre of a target mat. Points are awarded for the number of stones a team has nearer the centre of the target than the other team Stones can be propelled using hands or feet or can be delivered using a ramp.
Gillian Newlyn, Inclusion Co-ordinator said: “The students all love playing the game and it’s often very exciting when a team blasts the other team’s stone off the target to leave theirs in a winning position! It is great to see pupils so enthusiastic and enjoying taking part in physical activity.”
“We have found throughout the county that the game appeals to children with special needs as it is very straightforward and non-threatening. We have Level 2 ( inter-school) competitions running in most of the 14 School Games Organiser areas which are usually very well attended and a Level 3 ( County ) competition. As the School Games Inclusion lead for the county, I have delivered CPD across the area to encourage more schools to play the game. It is now a permanent event on the County School Games Calendar.”
