Ford RideLondon Essex – 2024 is almost upon us and we’ve been catching up with the riders raising money for the Active Essex Foundation. 25 riders will be taking to the Essex roads in their Active Essex Foundation jersey on the 26th May and will be raising awareness for the charity.
A registered charity, set up to increase the use of physical activity in engaging and supporting communities, the Active Essex Foundation really appreciate these fundraising opportunities. Over 200 locally trusted organisations work with the team to deliver projects across Essex to engage young people who may be inactive and also at risk of exposure to criminal activity.
4,136 young people have been directly supported by the Sport and Youth Crime Prevention Project, which focuses on young people involved in or at risk of involvement with the youth justice system. Interventions and projects such as BoxSmart and Girls Inspired have been made possible through funding. These two projects target young people who may be less active and inspire them to become involved in physical activity in a variety of forms such as boxing, martial arts, gym sessions and walking. Highlighting the benefits of activity is one aim, but the team also ensure there are opportunities for mentoring and life skills sessions, which are embedded into the projects to aid the young people as they develop and look for employment.
We have been able to catch up with some of the riders who are in the midst of training and preparations. Tom Underwood, Delivery Manager at NHS Horizons, unfortunately came off his bike a few months ago and broke a rib but has used Ford RideLondon – Essex as a great motivational tool to get back on his bike and build his training back up. Pushing through an injury and getting back into a rhythm with training demonstrates his love for cycling!
Danny Stapleton told us;
“Now the weather has improved (slightly), it easier to get out and practice. I have used the past couple of Sundays to get the heavy miles in and I am looking forward to the day, and hoping it will be as sunny as the past 2 years. I have raised £120 so far though kind donations where I work and I’m hopeful more will come through as the event gets closer. “
Each of the riders have been battling through the British springtime weather which is something to be applauded as the wet training rides can’t be much fun! Hopefully the sun will be shining over all the riders taking part in the mass participation event on the big day!
Viola Vitcu – Zuokumor has been training before the school run, getting up very early in the morning to fit in 30 – 40 miles in preparation. She told us;
“This time, albeit early, is perfect as there aren’t many cars on the roads and it’s also bright. “Rise and Ride” or “Chasing Sunrise” are common titles for my rides on Strava. “
Hearing from the riders and keeping up to date with their training plans has shown their passion for cycling and also their drive to complete such a challenge. We want to wish them the best of luck for the mass participation event and hope to follow up in the future with how the money raised has benefitted young people across Essex.
