Our Essex beaches are the perfect playground for getting active whether it’s a brisk walk, a sandy run, a family game of beach rounders or a quick dip! This National Beach Day, step out of your routine, breathe in the salty air, and celebrate the natural beauty that’s just a short walk or drive away.
Beaches have huge recreational value alongside the physical and mental benefits from moving in the fresh air. The salty air can help your body absorb more oxygen so improved breathing should make any movement or activity feel like a breeze. Being by water has a calming and tranquil effect on our mental wellbeing, combined with the positive hormones released during activity this makes getting moving at the beach the ultimate self care exercise.
Active Essex have been able to support programmes promoting the benefits of beach activity, for example Blue Therapy Active. Pairing mindfulness with cold-water swimming, Blue Therapy Active have utilised the wonders of the sea to increase activity and positivity in the Essex residents that attend weekly.
When speaking to the leaders, Del and Sarah, they reflected to us; “the stories that have been shared with us throughout this journey have been amazing. From a life saved for one lady while out for a swim with a friend, to many others who have improved their mindfulness profoundly.”
If local groups weren’t inspiration enough to get active on the sand, then you may have witnessed the amazing Beach Volleyball teams that took to the Olympic stage this summer in Paris under the Eiffel Tower! The sand covered court was the stage for some amazing matches and showcased how beach based sports deserve more recognition for how skilful and hard working the athletes need to be!
Maintaining these spaces is another focus on Beach Day and it should be everyone’s responsibility to be environmentally aware. What better way to get some steps in and show you appreciation for our Essex beaches than organising a beach clean up! Removing rubbish and potential hazards makes it a better experiences for yourself, other residents and the wildlife!
Whether it’s a special day trip or a new addition to your routine, get down to an Essex beach and get moving! Taking an early morning dip or practising some sunset yoga could be the new movement that changes your active journey and your wellbeing.
