Blue Monday is said to be a day when people experience sadness and anxiety the most but instead of looking at the day as a barrier, we should use it as a way to tackle stigmas and offer guidance and support. One reason that anxiety and isolation can manifest over this period can be because we don’t engage in conversations with friends, family and colleagues that can relieve some of this stress.
Physical activity and movement can be a perfect way to start these conversations by providing a safe and comfortable environment. Going for a walk with a colleague or a bike ride with a friend could be a great start.
January is a great month to take some time and focus on you. Ensuring you look after yourself should be a priority and physical activity and group movement can boost positive hormones and create happy emotions. Sometimes it’s the simple things like a work football team or local running group that can be the kick starter to a great year.
Going back to school or work and getting back into a routine after the holidays can sometimes be overwhelming but planning ahead and making sure you check in with yourself can make sure you look after your wellbeing. Talk to your friends and colleagues and let them know if you’re struggling or suggest a walk to catch up after the December break!
Taking steps towards better mental health could be something you wish to take by yourself at first and sometimes it’s the small first steps that can make big changes. Ensuring you get outside for fresh air and interaction with nature is important and this could involve a wide range of activities! Sometimes it’s the activities we enjoyed as children for example that could bring the most joy and positivity, like frisbee or scavenger hunts. As long as your body is moving and feeling good then it doesn’t matter how this is achieved. Don’t let the weather stop you either as there’s plenty to get involved with especially with online platforms like our Find Your Active YouTube channel which has a range of videos from dance workouts to seated exercises.
It’s important to look after yourself not just throughout January but year-round. With short, dark days, utilising the daylight hours will really benefit you with increasing your levels of Vitamin D intake. With a lunchtime activity, or fresh morning stroll you will notice a difference. It’s the smallest changes that can make the biggest difference when looking after yourself.
