Essex receives ‘Highly Commended’ award for supporting girls’ football across the county

Active Essex

The recent ‘Highly Commended’ award Essex received for Outstanding Engagement through Programmes and Events, as part of the Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnerships, highlights the incredible efforts and collaboration that has gone into creating fantastic football opportunities for girls in Essex. This ‘Highly Commended’ award is a win for everyone who’s been involved in growing girls’ football in the area.

A big part of the success has been focusing on encouraging Year 3 and Year 4 girls to get involved. Thanks to fun, Disney-themed football festivals throughout the school year, more than 1,000 young girls got their first taste of football. Delivered in place through the Essex School Games Organisers Network, these events weren’t just about playing, they’ve set many of these girls on the path to a lifelong love of football and staying active.

Working with local schools has also been key, with over 200 young leaders who helped run the festivals, gaining valuable experience in coaching and refereeing. These young leaders became role models, sharing their excitement and skills with the younger players. Their influence will inspire future generations of female footballers for years to come.

The programme’s success didn’t end there, as a significant focus was placed on creating pathways for girls to continue their football journey outside of school. Local grassroots clubs were invited to showcase their programmes, introducing girls to ongoing opportunities to play football. This initiative helped strengthen community bonds and provided a smooth transition from school to club football, ensuring these young players had the opportunity to remain engaged.

The impact of the programme extended far beyond traditional football. Due to the overwhelming success of the girls’ football programme, Essex took a bold step forward by hosting a SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) girls’ football session at this year’s Invincible Games.

Competing in the Southend Junior League against boys’ teams, Concord Rangers Under 14’s girls team received a #MoveWithUs ‘Move Makers’ award and their accomplishment is a testament to the power of girls’ football and the importance of breaking down gender stereotypes. It is also a reflection of Essex’s broader mission: to challenge outdated norms and prove that girls can excel in any competitive environment when given the opportunity.
