Nearly 100 activity clubs provided a memorable half term for young people this October! Funded by Essex County Council and through the Essex ActivAte programme, club providers across the county were able to offer free spaces and activities, helping to support families and keep children engaged, active and fed during the week break.
Over 2,400 young people attended an Essex ActivAte half term club and took part in seasonal activities, helping to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. It also provided valuable opportunities for social interaction, boosting their confidence, and encouraging teamwork and creativity through pumpkin picking, outdoor play, colouring, crafts, baking and much more.
One parent told us:
“The clubs this half term has been a lifesaver. My son comes home so happy, telling me about all the activities he’s done, and he’s also made so many friends!”
With the Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme that runs in the main holidays being primarily for families who receive income related free school meals, the half term programmes are extended to ‘low-income’ working families and a small number of other eligible groups, providing additional support to Essex families.
October half term engaged nearly 70% of children on free school meals, highlighting the need for the programme and reaching those who benefit most from it’s offer.
A club provider from Harlow explained:
“Our half term clubs positively impact children and the community, improving physical wellbeing, building confidence, and teaching new skills through multi-sports. Cooking education promotes healthy eating, while our free hot meals ease financial strain on families. By connecting families to community resources, we foster a lasting sense of support and resilience.”
With the programme being a lifeline for the Essex community, the support was particularly important for families facing financial pressures. Essex ActivAte clubs offered a reliable, affordable solution, giving families peace of mind by creating safe, engaging spaces for children. The initiative also allowed parents to focus on work, other responsibilities, and enjoy well-deserved respite.
Local organisations who work with Essex ActivAte to deliver activity clubs highlighted the devastating impact if half term support did not continue:
“Parents have expressed concerns about not affording holiday clubs without funding, with some facing the loss of jobs due to childcare challenges. Without funding, we couldn’t offer free spaces, and children would miss out on essential opportunities to stay active, socialise, learn skills, try new activities, enjoy healthy foods, and go on trips – Partner from Tendring
“Many families rely on this provision to balance work and childcare, knowing their children are in a safe, trusted environment without the added financial stress. Without offering free spaces, young people would miss out on valuable activities and positive influences which are essential for their growth and development.” – Partner from Chelmsford
