Our final One in a Million for 2019 is walk leader, Richard Grey.
Richard delivers Walking for Health in Uttlesford, 4 times a week with over 50 walkers attending! Walking for Health is a national scheme to encourage anyone who wants to get back into physical activity or participate in group walks. Each of Richard’s walks vary in length and difficulty to be inclusive for all in his community.
Walking with a community group improves social interaction, play, relaxation, discovery and enjoyment. Kelly Harman, Health and Wellbeing lead for Active Essex said: “Richard brings people with him. His walks are friendly, making sure no one is left behind and is a true asset to his community.”
Uttlesford District Council, Health and Wellbeing team said: “Richard is a very supportive, engaging and committed individual. He has been leading Health Walks in Thaxted for years and many people have benefitted for the walks he leads. His work is very much valued by the Health and Wellbeing team, as he increases physical activity and social interaction within his community.”
Richard, now an established walk leader within his community, is linked with other organisations. He said: “I walk because I really enjoy it and want to give something back to my community. It keeps me fit as well as the walkers that join me. I am now working with a charitable organisation, Support 4 Sight, which are all beginnings, but I look forward to seeing how it develops.” Support 4 Sight is a charity in West Essex that supports and assists people with sight loss along with their carers and families. They offer support, home visits, a cycling club, coffee mornings, computer training and Richards’ walks.
