Colchester Kings RFC, East Anglia's first gay and inclusive rugby team, was founded in 2022 to combat homophobia and transphobia in rugby and reduce barriers to team sports.

After a successful season, they narrowly missed the National final before winning the Bingham Cup in Rome, where they competed against teams from around the world. With 40 members, they triumphed over USA's Phoenix Storm. As they approach the 24/25 season, the team continues to grow, hosting learning and development days to inspire more inclusive players to get involved in rugby. They are proud of their achievements and ongoing community impact.

Torquespeed Football Club focuses on fun, development, and team spirit, offering inclusive opportunities for all ages and abilities.

The club has grown significantly under new leadership, expanding from just two teams after COVID to nearly 200 members and nine teams, including two female squads. Coaches volunteer hundreds of hours, ensuring children receive up-to-date training while also organising events such as beach trips and Wembley tours. Their dedication has led to great improvement in team performance, with multiple teams reaching finals and earning sportsmanship awards, whilst playing a vital role in the physical, mental, and social development of local youth.

The club's Junior Leadership Academy builds life skills in youth, while its inclusive ethos fosters confidence and empowerment, ensuring every student feels valued and part of the YGD family.

The public will have the opportunity to contribute to deciding the winner of the below three categories by voting:

  • Unsung Hero

You can vote via the Active Essex website from Monday 21st October until Sunday 27th October 2024.

How many times can I vote using the public vote?

You can vote once for each of the three public vote categories.

How will we know the results?

  • The winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on the evening of Thursday 5th December 2024.
  • We will share live social media posts from the Active Essex account announcing the winners on the night.
  • The results will be published on the Active Essex website after the event.
